Selling a product in a self-operated machine to a customer is known as vending (either bulk of full line). The customer puts quarters, dollars or a card into the machine and withdraws the items without the need for a salesperson. Bulk vending means that the goods are a large quantity of one type of item such as in a gumball machine. Full line vending would be the type of vending in which candy bars, pretzels and chips are retrieved from a machine with a variety of different brands of products.
The number of people walking past your vending machines on a daily basis is an important determinant of your financial success in the vending industry. The vending units must be located in a locale with a very large number of possibly purchasers in order to have high sales volume. Medical centers, transportation hubs, and high schools are examples of places where you may find these high numbers of potential vending consumers. Making income passively through these machines-that is, earning cash when not actually being at the location-is certainly an appealing aspect of this business. Yet, it is important to understand how to avoid failure.
The placement and position of the machines themselves is something to look into. The newer, more aesthetically appealing the machine itself, the higher the likelihood that people will be drawn to your machine. The quality and desirability of the product, and the smooth functioning of the unit, are also key points.
The fewer the competitors, the better off you will be. A lot of ravenous passengers at a bus or train station in line waiting before a lengthy trip would be a prime location choice. Less snack/soda/candy options in an area also bode well for your vending machine sales. A location with employees who work the so-called “graveyard shift” are in need of food options, as there may not be other options available in the immediate area. This can spell lucrative sales for your vending business simply due to a well-thought out location.
The individual considering entering the vending industry should do the requisite research prior to moving ahead with what could seem like a simple and unchallenging business plan. Finding the right place, in a building which accepts your machine and negotiates a favorable environment for you is phase one. Purchasing the vending machines, whether they be new machines or used (though ideally in good working condition so as to avoid expenses down the road) is phase two. Maintaining a broken down machine could quickly become a money pit. Lastly, thievery and damage done to your machines by customers is more common than you may imagine. There will always be a certain percentage of customers that try to pick your machine or hit it so as to receive your good without paying for them, and the costs of dealing with these problems add up.
Nevertheless, vending (either bulk or full line) is an excellent way to enter the business world in a relatively low risk arena and serve populations in need of food or drink items, which are not readily available in other forms. Fill the need and you may succeed.
