Constipation can happen to anyone including infants and toddlers. At this age, if you are not keen in identifying the signs of constipation you may just think that your baby is just throwing tantrums or having crying spells. We are not usually aware of the food that we feed our baby such as formula milk which is the number one cause of constipation in babies. Treating constipation is not a hard thing to do as the remedies can be found in the comfort of your own home.
In addition to breast milk, you should also feed your child with fruits and vegetables so they have enough fiber in their body that makes the stools softer and the digestive process normal. Avoid foods that cause constipation such as boiled egg, fatty foods, cheese and other dairy products. You should also stay away from cookies, chocolates and candies.
You should gradually increase your child’s fluid intake and make sure that he stays hydrated all throughout the day. You can offer him fruit juice or plain water to ease the problem of constipation. You may also feed him with fresh fruits such as watermelon as this have a great amount of water that your baby needs.
Train your baby to sit on the potty trainer or toilet seat for 10 minutes after meals so he will get used to it. When he feels like passing stools, it will be natural for him to head to the rest room of sit on the potty trainer. Make sure that you child is comfortable sitting on the toilet seat. Otherwise, he will have a hard time passing stools.
Make it a habit to praise or reward your child whenever he has bowel movement as this will help him develop a regular habit of going to rest room whenever there is a call of nature. You may reward him with praise or a hug. Do not give him chocolates and candies as this can also cause constipation and other health problems.
Always start treating constipation by reviewing your child’s daily diet. If the symptoms do not stop and your child still feels uneasy, you may visit you pediatrician to determine the cause of the problem. Do not try to fix your child’s health problem by giving him laxatives without the doctor’s prescription as this may damage his digestive system. Always seek help from a doctor to make sure that you are on the right track.
