Trampolines with enclosure are recommended for children from the age of three up to eight or nine, depending on the manufacturer. Many of these will be a smaller size trampoline made lower to the ground specifically for safety reasons and use by pre-school age kids and younger schoolchildren. As with any trampoline, adult supervision is necessary to ensure safety. Do not mistake the netting for an absolute safety net for your child. They still need you to show them how to safely use the equipment and keep an eye on them to reinforce what you teach them.
As children learn how to safely use the trampoline, you can move them up to a larger piece of equipment, but trampolines with enclosure are still recommended to prevent as many accidents as possible. These older children also still need adequate teaching, rules, and supervision to ensure their safety whenever they are using this equipment.
There are many brands, sizes, and shapes of trampolines available, and just as many enclosures available to fit each type. Be certain that the safety enclosure you buy fits your trampoline snugly and is of good quality to prevent collapse. You also need to make sure that the upright bars on the enclosure are padded to prevent injuries, and that there is a backup system in case of collapse of one or more of the bars. Often this takes the form of a highly rated top strap that can prevent the system from total collapse. The enclosure needs to have a widely overlapping screen system, Velcro closures, or bungee system to keep the netting closed when the kids are inside.
Though there are “playhouse” style enclosures which look like circus tents or cottages, these do not allow visibility for adults. It is recommended that you enclose your trampoline with an open-weave net for easy viewing, and non finger snagging properties.
