You may have been shopping recently, surfing the web or talking to a friend when the words “platform bed” came up.  Unlike the original platform beds built for strictly economic reasons, these minimalist style beds have become very popular in many hotels and upscale living accommodations.

A platform bed is essentially a mattress set on top of a platform with no box spring in between.  The lack of height this leads to usually a platform bed setting a bit lower to the floor than a traditional bed, although some models include drawers for storage, or other implements to raise the bed to a more normal level.

Today’s platform beds may utilize several different kinds of mattresses, but the most popular is a six to twelve inch think piece of memory foam that is quite comfortable.  Platform beds are also very popular for guest beds, as they allow for many unique interior design options.
