There are a myriad color schemes to choose from and a whole lot of those would be successful in your home. It is easier if you have a particular preference for a group of colors but, if not, you can develop your color preferences over time. To do that start becoming color aware and collecting colors until you work out your taste in color:-
1. Gather Colors
Gather as many different images as you can showing color, not just those depicting rooms or furniture but any object. For example you might have a picture of a bowl of oranges or a red lipstick. Also, pick up paint charts and add them to the mix as well as swatches of curtain and upholstery fabric, even carpet samples.
2. Mix and Match
Once you have a lot of swatches and images, lay out all your colors on a table and move them around until you find particular combinations you like. You will also start noticing combinations of color which do not work well together or those you don’t like. Eventually, if you do this enough, you will find yourself gravitating towards different color groups.
3. Look Elsewhere
If you are still stuck, visit places which spark inspiration such as museums and art galleries. How have the objects there used color? Is there a painting which particularly appeals to you? What colors were used in artwork in the past?
4. Last Resort
If this seems like too much work or you just have no clue about what to choose look at color combinations which have already been worked out for you. Look at the displays of furniture and bedding in big stores and see what colors they have used. No doubt these will be the latest color combinations to try and you should find something you like. If they have used a purple area rug on dark wood perhaps that is a combination that would work in your home. Or you might see an aqua and brown color scheme used in a bedding display which would translate into a living room color scheme you like.
