Once you hit a certain age it’s nigh impossible to stay fit and fabulous, or so the theory goes. But guess what? The theory is wrong. Just because you are getting on a bit doesn’t mean you can’t get and stay fit and fabulous.
The truth is we can get (and stay) strong, toned and full of vitality, no matter what our age.
- Make exercise a habit. The right exercise can work miracles for health and looks. But to make it work it has to be as routine as brushing your teeth.
- Fit exercise into a busy life. Getting fit will cost you about six hours a week of planned exercise. Find those hours by getting up earlier, watching less TV or delegating more.
- Get your head right. To shed weight and improve the way your body looks, you need to begin with your head. It’s common to psych ourselves out of exercise as we age, but this is a mistake.
- Focus on muscle. Strength training can reverse muscle and bone loss and make bodies work better, shed weight and look leaner. It makes you look good and helps to prevent thinning bones, rising blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
- Stand up. Too much sitting can lead to weaker bones, high blood sugar levels and even deep vein thrombosis. Increasing daily movement will also keep your body trim. Research shows that incidental movement throughout the day can burn as much as 1400 kilojoules.
