Wooden trunks have been around for hundreds of years and they are still popularly used for as a storage space for valuable items and things that we want to keep safe over a longer period of time. The construction of these storage boxes was performed by master craftsmen ensuring that the joins and edges were precisely made. Travellers used these trunks as luggage pieces that were taken on long voyages and overland journeys. The wealthier classes made use of the more decorative trunks marking their status while the lower classes used the plain and straightforward types of trunks.
The earlier types of trunks used on these journeys were known as dome top trunks and were made of oak in such a way that they were incredibly sturdy. Some of the most exquisitely designed oak trunks can be found with the range of oak slat trunks that are still available today. Not only were they well constructed boxes that were reinforced by the way the oak slats were added over the body of the trunk but they also look particularly attractive. Oak has long been a popular construction material and the durability of the trunks that were made with the wood can be seen today with the many old oak trunks that are available today. Many are still in superb condition and those that are less than stellar can be brought back to life with a refurbishment job.
Trunks were made with a variety of different types of tops depending on the trunk company doing the manufacturing. There are dome top trunks, as mentioned before, bevelled top and flat top trunks. The flat top trunks later evolved into steamer trunks and they fell into popular use towards the end of the 19th century. Placing one of these types of trunks in the house will create a remarkably distinguished piece of furniture that will look at home in any style of room.
