I don’t remember being depressed as child, or even into early adulthood. My depression was a result of the years of living a life I knew was not healthy. As a recovering alcoholic, I realize now the relationship between my drinking alcohol and depression over the years.
Every time I told myself I was going to quit drinking, I would last maybe a day, maybe two, a week at the most before I would drink again. Over time, this lack of, what I thought was self-control, took its toll on my self-esteem and self-worth. I simply could not stop drinking. As a result, I started experiencing severe depressive thoughts, including thoughts of suicide.
It makes sense to me today, for I realize alcohol is a depressant, so it would only make sense that constant abuse of it would cause depression. With that said, I do think in some cases I would drink because of my depressive feelings. For years, I would use alcohol to numb the depressive feelings. At some point, however, the alcohol stopped working. It was then I realized I was an alcoholic and needed to get some help. 3
