There are many hemorrhoid treatments available, some are simple diet changes and some are actual surgical procedures. Without a doubt Doppler-guided hemorrhoid arterial ligation (DG-HAL) for the treatment of hemorrhoids is a pretty exciting advancement in the treatment of hemorrhoids. This is a relatively new procedure developed by Kazumasa Morinaga, a Japanese surgeon. It is now fully approved by the FDA for the treatment of hemorrhoids, plus, it’s been shown to be as effective as other more traditional hemroid treatment options.
The Doppler part of the equation is the use of ultrasound to find the hemorrhoidal veins and then stop the blood flow to the hemroid. When the blood flow stop, the hemorrhoid shrinks up and stops causes problems. Because this procedure doesn’t involve cutting, it results in a faster recovery time with minimal discomfort. You will be able to return to work in 2-3 days. Plus, this procure is minimally invasive and can be done very quickly on an outpatient basis.
According to a scientific paper published in 2007 titled Treatment of Grade 2 and 3 Hemorrhoids with Doppler-Guided Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation and authored by B.M. Wallis de Vries, E.S.J. van der Beek, L.R.H. de Wijkerslooth, W.C. van der Zwet, J.A.B. van der Hoeven, M. Eeftinck Schattenkerk, E.H. Eddes Doppler guided arterial litigation achieved higher marks than rubber band ligation which is the most common hemorrhoid treatment available.
In 18 clinical trials, 13% of patients who had rubber ligation reported pain after the procedure and the retreatment rate was 40%. Reported pain during the above study was only 6% and the re-treatment rate was only 9% 18 months later for the DG-HAL.
The doctor’s in this study universally opted to make DG-HAL “the treatment of choice for symptomatic grade II and III hemorrhoids”. Somewhat ironically they wanted to do more comparison studies with rubber band ligation and DG-HAL, but due to the press, popularity and success rate of DG-HAL they couldn’t find enough patients willing to opt for the rubber band ligation to make the study possible.
