Is the shabby chic decorating style still a trend, or is it yesterday’s news? Ten years ago this decor was all the rage, but it seems to have fallen into disfavor in the designer magazines. That’s because home decorating publications thrive on creating trends, and shabby was definitely a hot trend when it first appeared on the scene. The media created this style and the media can destroy it, unlike established styles like classic and art deco, which have been around long enough to have a life of their own. But the decorating approach of using old items of sentimental value has been around longer than the pundits have, and it will be around long after they’re gone. Decorating with items like your grandmother’s wedding dress, or a pair of pink ballet slippers, or old jewelry, or a slightly scuffed armoire, will always be with us because these things are classics in their own right and will never go out of style.
