When compared to the former standard definition analogue TVs of the previous generation, high definition televisions have much greater resolutions. The move to digital broadcasting and the reduction in price of HD TVs has brought high definition television to the masses and consequently fuelled the success of the TV industry. The images displayed on a HDTV are made up of hundreds of rows of pixels. The number of rows varies between different standards of TVs, some being better than others.
Not all high definition televisions are of the same standard and the format of pictures displayed differs. The formats include 480i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The higher the number the more horizontal rows of pixels that picture the television displays is made up of. The letter stands for either interlaced or progressive scanning. With interlaced alternate lines that make up each frame are refreshed where progressive scanning refreshes every line. This has the result that progressive produces less blurring and sharper images.
The term Full HD TV is a phrase which is widely used to describe televisions that are capable of displaying the 1080p format. It is ‘full’ high definition because the resolution of 1080p is the best and the scanning method is progressive which is the better of the two methods available. Another term that is frequently used is HD Ready, this is commonly used for the lower standards of 720i/p and 1080i, but to truly enjoy HD TV you are going to require a Full HD TV.
In order to get the best out of a Full HD TV ideally you are going to need a 1080p capable device to input into it. Even if you subscribe to high definition television channels through satellite or cable television providers, you will not achieve Full HD pictures on your TV because most channels are broadcast in 720p/i or 1080i. Also DVD players and previous generations of games consoles will not utilize a Full HD TV to its highest potential. To do this you are going to need a 1080p device such as a BluRay player, the latest games consoles or a PC.
